Adding an Authorization Content Area or Disability
Education Code section 44225(e) and Title 5, California Code of Regulations, section 80499 allows a general education teacher to obtain an additional general education teaching credential or a special education teacher to obtain an additional special education teaching credential without completing the full professional preparation program for that credential. Title 5 Sections 80089.3 and 80089.4 allows Introductory and Specific Subject Matter Authorizations in core academic subject areas for General Education Credential holders. Title 5, California Code of Regulations 80089, 80089.1 and 80089.2 allows for Supplementary Authorizations for General Education Credential holders.

English Language Development (ELD) and instruction for primary language development are generally authorized at the level indicated by the holder鈥檚 prerequisite credential including preschool, grades K-12 and in classes organized primarily for adults.
To qualify for recommendation:
- Possess a valid California teaching credential
- Verification of English Learner authorization by one of the following:
- Valid Language Development Specialist (LDS) Certificate, CLAD Certificate, teaching credential with an English Learner Authorization or CLAD Emphasis
- Eligibility for a CLAD Certificate or teaching credential with an English learner
authorization based on one of the following:
- Passing scores on Subtests 1, 2 and 3 of the California Teacher of English Learners (CTEL) Examination. Scores used for certification purposes may be no older than ten years from the individual passed exam date.
- Possession of an out-of-state credential showing an English learner authorization.
- Possession of the certificate in Early and Middle Childhood/English as a New Language or Early Adolescence through Young Adulthood/English as a New Language.
- Verification of subject matter (Spanish language proficiency) by one of the following:
- Passing score on CSET Spanish III. Scores used for certification purposes may be no older than ten years from the individual passed exam date.
- Completion of course work in a Commission-approved bilingual program combined with passing scores CSET Spanish III

The authorizes the holder to assess student reading and provide reading instruction in response to those assessments. RLAA holders are also authorized to develop, implement, and adapt the reading content curriculum and assist classroom teachers in these areas.
To qualify for recommendation:
- Possess a valid California teaching credential
- Possess an English Learner Authorization
- Verification of three years successful, full-time teaching experience in any grade or subject, preschool through adult exclusive of student teaching, intern teaching, or teaching while holding an emergency or teaching permit
- Completion of an RLAA professional preparation program, including successful completion of a supervised field experience.

Introductory Authorizations
An Introductory Subject Matter Authorization authorizes the holder to teach the subject
matter content typically included in curriculum guidelines and textbooks approved
for study in grades 9 and below. This authorization can be added to a Multiple Subject
or Single Subject credential.
Available authorizations: Art, Dance, English, A language other than English, Mathematics, Music, Science, Social Science, Theater.
To qualify:
- Possess a valid prerequisite teaching credential
- Complete one of the following:
- A degree major from a regionally accredited college/university in the subject area
- 32 semester/48 quarter units of non-remedial coursework in content area sought. Science
requires 6 semester/8 quarter units in each of the four science content areas
- Coursework must be completed with a with a grade of 鈥淐鈥 or better (鈥渃redit鈥, 鈥減assing鈥, or 鈥渟atisfactory鈥 grades are acceptable). For more information on acceptable/unacceptable coursework, please consult: .
- Course must be at least a 3 semester/4 quarter unit course
Specific Subject Matter Authorizations
A Specific Subject Matter Authorization authorizes the holder to teach the specific
subject in grades preschool, K-12, and classes organized primarily for adults. This
authorization can be added to a Multiple Subject or Single Subject credential.
Available authorizations: Art History/Appreciation, Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Civics/Government,
Dance, Drama/Theatre, Economics (social science), English Composition, Geography, Geosciences, History,
Instrumental Music, Literature, Photography, Physics, Plant Science, Three-Dimensional
Art, Two-Dimensional Art, Vocal Music
To qualify:
- Possess a valid prerequisite teaching credential
- Complete one of the following:
- A degree major from a regionally accredited college/university in the subject area
- 32 semester/48 quarter units of non-remedial coursework in content area sought. History
requires a minimum of 16 semester units in both world history and U.S. history.

Holders of Multiple Subject or Standard Elementary Teaching Credentials may have one
or more subjects added to their credential as a supplementary authorization by verifying
completion of the supplementary authorization requirements. A Supplementary Authorization
authorizes you to teach only grade 9 and below.
To qualify:
- A degree major from a regionally accredited college/university in the subject area
- 20 semester/30 quarter units of non-remedial upper division coursework in subject area sought or 10 semester/15 quarter units of upper-division non-remedial coursework in subject area
- Completion of at least one course in each of the areas listed after subject. For a

Holders of Single Subject, Standard Secondary, or Special Secondary Teaching Credentials
may have one or more subjects added to their credential as a supplementary authorization
by verifying completion of the supplementary authorization requirements.

For Special Education
The Added Authorization in Early Childhood Special Education authorizes the individual to provide special education services to children from birth to 5 years of age.
To add the ECSE Added Authorization:
- Hold a valid California intern, preliminary, clear, or life Education Specialist credential.
- Apply and be admitted to the Special Education ECSE program: .
- Complete the ECSE coursework: EDSP 5710, EDSP 5720, and EDSP 5730.
- EDSP 5730 is a fieldwork course
- Submit a completed application at the end of your ECSE program.

The holder of a valid Education Specialist teaching credential may add another specialty area to their credential by completing a California Commission on Teacher Credentialing program. Requirements for adding another specialty depend on the type of credential held and where the initial credential was earned.
Requirements for adding a specialty area are listed below for previous 裸聊直播 credential completers and must be completed within 5 years of the 1st credential. Individuals who completed their teaching credential at another institution should request a credential evaluation.

Adding an MMSN specialty area to an ESN Education Specialist Credential:
- Pedagogy course in specialty area 鈥 EDSP 5650
- 50 hours of clinical practice in new specialty area. Hours must be completed within 1 year of EDSP 5650 course.
Adding an ESN specialty area to an MMSN Education Specialist Credential:
- Pedagogy course in specialty area 鈥 EDSP 5660
- 50 hours of clinical practice in new specialty area. Hours must be completed within 1 year of EDSP 5660 course.
Adding MMSN or ESN authorization to a clear Mild/Moderate or Moderate Severe credential (valid until June 30, 2025):
- Possession of appropriate prerequisite credential aligned with appropriate bridge
authorization.
- For MMSN, holds a mild/moderate credential which includes autism authorization.
- For ESN, holds a moderate/severe credential which includes autism authorization.
- Completion of additional content for new Teaching Performance Expectations. 裸聊直播 does
not currently offer bridge coursework but suggests the following programs:
- Completion of pedagogy course in specialty area: EDSP 5650 to add MMSN to ESN or completion of EDSP 5660 to add ESN to MMSN.
- 50 hours of successful clinical practice in new specialty area. Hours must be completed within 1 year of EDSP 5650/ESP 5660 course or prior to June 30, 2025.

Instructions on how to apply for your second specialty area:
To apply for another specialty area, you must currently hold a California Preliminary or Clear Education Specialist Credential with English Learner Authorization and Autism Authorization. The additional specialty area will be issued in line with the current credential held. For example, if you hold a preliminary credential, then a preliminary authorization for the additional specialty will be issued. If you hold a clear credential, then a clear authorization for the additional specialty will be issued.
- Submit the following items for approval to your Program Advisor:
- Hour verification - A letter of verification from school administration must be provided to acknowledging clinical practice hour completion.
- Statement of Knowledge.2-3 page essay on what you learned and observed during your 50 hour clinical practice for the new specialty. This is to include your knowledge/competency on curriculum, assessment/evaluation practices, evidence-based practices, and behavior management approval.
- Your Program Advisor or Program Director will notify you of approval of your hours/statement of knowledge and send you an application for additional specialty which you will submit with application for recommendation.
