Ruth Harley, BA (Hons) Event Management, placement at Millbrook Venues
Three words to describe your placement… Unique. Fun. Challenging.
Two tips for placement students… Build positive relationships. Don’t get complacent – always show enthusiasm.
Most satisfying… Running two large events. One was an exhibition, the other a product launch. Running these was really satisfying – it’s given me the experience to be an event manager when I graduate. It was my job to brief staff and manage all aspects of the events, ensuring the clients’ needs were met to a high standard.
Most enjoyable… I ran Aston Martin events and was given the opportunity to drive an Aston Martin Vanquish – on the Mile Straight, at 160mph! The professional driver then took me around the Alpine route. This is just one experience that’s been really fun – there have been loads more. I’m extremely grateful for this unique placement.
One example of how your course prepared you for the placement… The ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥ course is really practical. Planning and putting on a live event in my second year helped give me the skills and knowledge required for my placement.
Future career goals… I’d like to work on experiential events. I really enjoy events that create an impact on people and offer unique experiences. In my second year, I studied abroad in Macau, China – this was a great experience, as I love learning about different cultures. Working abroad would be fun, so I’m looking to work in international events.
