Josh Wright’s journey to becoming an award-winning creative in the television industry has been something of a voyage of discovery.
While he recalls being interested in TV and media while at school, Josh had no idea it could become a viable career plan until a teacher pointed him in the direction of the television production degree at ÂãÁÄÖ±²¥. Then, after three years on the course, it was a year-long internship with Disney that introduced him to the possibilities of making television trailers and promos.
Having progressed from an intern to more senior level creative roles with Comedy Central, Channel 5 and now MTV Entertainment, in 2022 Josh’s work was recognised with seven awards at . These included five golds, a silver and a bronze for projects including and .
Josh said: “As a teenager I enjoyed making silly You Tube videos with my mates but had no idea it could become anything more than a hobby. A teacher suggested that I explore roles in the television industry, and I did some research into possible degrees. I discovered that Bournemouth was ranked among the best in this area and after a bit more research it soon became a no brainer that this was the place to study. The course gave me the chance to try all the different aspects of television, from writing and filming to directing and editing, within a supportive environment where you can try things, make mistakes and develop your craft.â€
As the degree came to an end, Josh applied to become a Creative Intern with The Walt Disney Company where he began using his skills to develop on-air promotional campaigns. He said: “The internship was incredibly helpful. It gave me a chance to build professional experience and contacts. It also introduced me to making short-form content that could be used to promote new shows. It was another one of those moments where you discover something you hadn’t really considered as a career route before.â€
Now at MTV Entertainment, Josh works on briefs provided by the marketing and programming teams to develop creatives that will attract viewers to tune into the latest shows. This can range from writing and commissioning , to writing and filming with famous faces on the other side of the world for the .
Josh said: “It’s incredibly varied and I enjoy being able to bring my own ideas and working across different genres. My advice to others wanting to work in television is not to rule anything out as you find what you are passionate about. Once you do, you’ll find that you want to put your all into it and push yourself to produce the best possible work. That has been the case for me and to receive the Promax Awards this year across multiple projects felt like external recognition of that. If I look back on my time at school, I couldn’t have imagined this is what I would be doing for a career, but I absolutely love it and feel privileged to get paid for a job I love.â€
